Opportunities for Giving

Nittany Lion Club

The Nittany Lion Club, composed of Penn State alumni and friends of Intercollegiate Athletics, was established in 1959 to create greater interest in and financial support for Penn State varsity athletics. Members of the Nittany Lion Club make possible grant-in-aid support for more than five hundred worthy student-athletes and provide operational support for our entire twenty-nine sport program, including fifteen men's and fourteen women's teams.

Success with Honor—A Campaign for the Penn State Way

Unlike most nationally competitive programs, Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics must entirely fund all twenty-nine varsity sports without financial assistance from the state or University. Tickets, corporate sponsorship, and merchandise sales don't cover the cost of running a first-class athletics program.

The University has made fundraising for the Intercollegiate Athletics program a top priority and has undertaken a five-year, $100 million campaign to raise money for a variety of key initiatives.

Endowments

Endowed gifts are held by the University in perpetuity. The initial gift is invested, and a portion (typically about 5%) of the fund's market value is awarded annually for the purpose designated by the benefactor. Thus, the benefactor who makes an endowment gift today can feel confident it will continue to support its intended purpose far into the future. There are many different ways to support Penn State's athletic endowment program:

  • Endow an athletic position. With a minimum gift of $300,000, you can choose to support any position on any team that is not already endowed.
  • Naming a scholarship. With a minimum gift of $50,000, which can be paid out over five years, you can support Penn State's student-athletes.
  • Donate to the Penn State Athletics General Endowment Fund. This fund was instituted to provide a perpetual source of additional revenue for Penn State's athletic program. There is no minimum gift level for this giving opportunity.
  • Donate to a specific existing endowment. Contact the Athletic Development office to find out what is already established. There is no minimum gift level for this giving opportunity.

Special Projects

Wrestling Challenge

The goal of the Penn State Wrestling Challenge goal is to provide Nittany Lion wrestlers with perpetual support to ensure the program's ongoing strength and success. Creating an endowed fund will help guarantee that there will always be the means available to provide athletic scholarships and program operating expenses, and to hire outstanding coaches.

A designated endowment to fully fund the Penn State wrestling program will enable Intercollegiate Athletics to:

  • Endow the grant-in-aid/scholarship program to the allowable NCAA limit;
  • Provide for a full-time coaching staff of national and world-class professionals;
  • Ensure the resources necessary to support a training, development, and competitive agenda the equal to any in the nation.
