Opportunities for Giving
The Penn State Annual Fund
Annual contributions made by alumni and friends of the College of Earth and Mineral Science provide ongoing resources to support the college's diverse programs and activities. In recent years, these contributors have supported initiatives such as the new student outdoor orientation program, Total Orientation Trips for Earth and Mineral Sciences (TOTEMS), where incoming students have an opportunity to build relationships with faculty and senior students before attending the first day of class on campus. Annual gifts provide critical support to existing undergraduate and graduate scholarships as well as money to help EMS attract top faculty members.
Memorial Endowments
C. Drew Stahl Scholarship Fund
To honor the memory of the late Dr. Drew Stahl, professor emeritus of petroleum and natural gas engineering, whose career in the college spanned more than five decades, former students and colleagues established a scholarship fund to recognize his lifetime accomplishments. The C. Drew Stahl Scholarship Fund supports talented undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the petroleum and natural gas engineering program. Colleagues of Dr. Stahl report that on many occasions he was heard to proclaim, "We ought to be able to recruit students just like Joe Paterno recruits football players--full scholarships, room and board, money for books and fees." With the establishment of the C. Drew Stahl Scholarship in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, the college moves one step closer to making Dr. Stahl's dream a reality.William F. Vogely Award Fund
In 1999, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the larger mineral economics community lost a dear friend. Bill Vogely spent seventeen years as a faculty member in the college from 1974 until his retirement in 1991. He served as head of the mineral economics department from 1975 through 1988. During his time at Penn State, Bill was not only a teacher and administrator, but also a mentor and inspiration to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as fellow faculty members. His widow, Betsy and her family, along with one of Bill's students have established a new endowment to honor Bill's memory. The William F. Vogely Award Fund will recognize outstanding achievement by disabled students enrolled in the college. Alternatively, the fund will support undergraduate students enrolling in the Energy, Environmental, and Mineral Sciences minor who have achieved outstanding academic success. The Peter R. Gould Memorial Fund
With the goal of supporting the programs of the newly named Peter R. Gould Center for Geography Education and Outreach, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of EMS have pledged $10,000 to create an endowment in honor of Evan Pugh professor of geography, Peter Gould who passed away in January 2001 after a year-long battle with cancer. The goals of the Gould Center are to expand student access to geography through distance education, to promote active learning in geography courses and to foster outreach efforts to constituents of the Geography Department.
Jesse F. Core Memorial Fund
The Core Memorial Fund provides scholarships for promising mineral engineering students, giving special consideration to those in their freshmen and sophomore years. The fund also provides for other educational activities in the mineral engineering program at Penn State. The fund honors one of Penn State's most illustrious alumni. Core directed one of the largest coal mining companies in the United States, was known for his leadership in mine safety, and who served as mentor in the career of many mining engineers.
